*Radon tests are normally done in areas suitable for occupancy. For example, a split-level house/building with a basement, a slab-on-grade room and a room over crawlspace will have tests placed in each of the three foundation types areas, using the guidelines below.

Radon Testing Information for the Do It Yourselfer:

  • Be set in rooms that can regularly occupied, such as family rooms, living rooms, playrooms, bedrooms, other.
  • Not be set in areas of high humidity, such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, spa rooms.
  • Be undisturbed during the testing period.
  • Be at least 3 feet from doors, windows to the outside or ventilation ducts.
  • Be out of the direct flow of air from the ventilation duct.
  • Be at least 1 foot from exterior walls.
  • Be 20 inches to 6 feet from the floor.
  • Be at least 4 inches away from other objects horizontally or vertically above the test.
  • Be at least 4 feet from heat, fireplaces and furnaces.
  • Be out of direct sunlight.
  • Be at least 10 feet from unsealed sump pits.
